Club Notes 23 October

Following the Roscommon County Final, we will be playing St Brigids in the Connacht semi-final on Sunday 12 November in Tuam Stadium.

Menlough conceded the league division 1 game, fixed for Saturday, to Corofin. As a result Corofin lie second in the league, one point behind St. James’. Although Corofin has one game in hand, this would not alter the top two in the league. Consequently we will play St. James’ in the league final. This fixture has yet to be confirmed.

Our Junior A team, lost the County Final to St James’ played in Tuam Stadium on Sunday. We led by 1-7 to 0-4 at half time, with the goal coming from David Morris. However, St. James’ dominated the second half and went on to win on a final scoreline of Corofin 1-9 to St. James’ 1-10. Despite this bitterly disappointing loss, great credit is due to the team and their management on their progress all year.

The 2017 season for the under 12 teams came to a close at the weekend. Alan, Mike, Ralph, Cormac, Martin and Cecil wanted to thank the parents and the boys for their efforts this year, and we all look forward to seeing the boys next year. Enjoy the break!

There was a big turnout in Belclare on Saturday morning for the final under 6, 7 and 8 session of the season. Members of the senior team came with the Frank Fox County Cup to meet the boys. Thanks to all the parents for their support during the season and special thanks to the senior team members Dylan Canney, Conor Cunningham, Jason Leonard, Dylan McHugh and Gary Sice who attended along with team manager Kevin O'Brien.

Lotto numbers drawn 9, 12, 14, 26. There was no winner of the jackpot and no match 3s. Seller’s prize Gerry Collins. Next week’s jackpot is €11,000 and draw is in the Club office.

Forty years ago this year, in 1977, Corofin won only their third County Football Championship, having had previous victories in 1932 and 1946. Corofin defeated Moycullen in the final on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-3. The team also featured Gerry and Ollie Burke who both went on to win All-Ireland Club titles with Corofin some 21 years later in 1998. Our thanks as ever to Paddy Keating for supplying details of the game. There is further coverage relating to the team’s win by Jim Carney in this week’s Tuam Herald.
